EOTO #2

 EOTO #2 Cancel Culture

Cancel culture is a very debatable topic in this generation. Cancel culture is when someone completely rejects an individual because they have said or done something that is offensive to them. Some people believe that punishing people for their actions is appropriate, but others think it's too harsh.  A number of individuals believe that people should get a chance to be forgiven or have a second chance.

Some of the positive impacts that cancel culture has had is it can encourage "accountability and growth." In some ways it points out the mistakes that someone has made that can be offensive to someone or a group of people. It's meant to help show the individual getting cancelled that they messed up so they can then educate themselves for the future. The main thing cancel culture is supposed to help is to make people think before their actions or hold people accountable for their behavior.

Some of the negative impacts that cancel culture has had is that it affects people's mental health. The impact it has on your mental health can be different depending on if you're the person getting cancelled. If you're the person being cancelled it can turn into bullying, which can lead to them feeling lonely. Loneliness can be "associated with higher anxiety, depression, and suicidal rates". Typically if a person gets cancelled they receive a lot of harsh words on social media and the internet as well. One prime example of someone experiencing mental health issues after being cancelled is Chrissy Teigen, who is a best-selling cookbook author and model. After getting cancelled, she said that "going outside sucks and doesn't feel right, being at home alone with my mind makes my depressed head race. I feel lost and need to find my place again."

The biggest problem with cancel culture is it tends to not let people be forgiven for their mistakes. It seems like people get "cancelled" and they have no chance to apologize. It's like if you get cancelled, everyone stops talking to you and then you have no opportunity of being forgiven by the general public. Cancel culture is supposed to show what's wrong or what isn't appropriate and punish people for their actions or words, but instead it has turned into a corrupt trend. It's corrupt because although it's supposed to make you learn from things, it doesn't give you a chance because once you're cancelled you aren't given any chances to redeem or learn from your mistakes.

Cancel culture can affect anyone, it doesn't matter if you're wealthy, poor, or middle class. It can affect all sorts of people, there's no specific type of person that gets cancelled more than anyone else. In fact, a number of celebrities have been cancelled over the years for numerous reasons. For example, J.K. Rowling, who is the author of Harry Potter got cancelled for making a comment on Twitter in June of 2020 that offended members of the transgender community. Another celebrity that has been a victim of cancel culture is Chris Pratt, who is an actor most commonly known for Marvel movies has been cacnelled multiple times on Twitter over claims that he is allegedly "homophobic" and goes to an anti-LGBTQ church. A lot of his fans have turned on him since and he has been harassed on social media at the same time.

In conclusion, cancel culture is a very debatable topic that has recently grown more and more over the recent years. If you're the person being cancelled it can be very hard emotionally on you, but some would agree that it needs to be done for that person to grow and realize the mistake they made. It has been very controversial before and it most likely will continue to be just as disputable in the near future.

EOTO Presentation #2 Reaction

Confirmation Bias

A term that I found interesting from one of the teams is confirmation bias. Confirmation bias is a decision making bias, which is typically unintentional based on preconceived opinions and stereotypes.

It typically occurs when someone only collects evidence of information that is in agreement with their opinions and beliefs, and ignores anything that disproves or argues against them. Confirmation bias has a tremendous effect on increasing stereotypes, whether it is gender, race, sexuality, class, etc.

Some of the most notable examples of confirmation bias being shown is within judges, doctors, or romantic partners. Confirmation bias has also had numerous real-world effects in medicine, law, and relationships.

One example is if a person believes homeless people are dangerous and they see a homeless person harming someone, that furthers their belief. The main point that comes along with confirmation bias is if someone is told fresh information and it goes along or confirms what they already believed, then they are more likely to "accept it as true and accurate."

The contradicting part is people tend to avoid when their stereotype has been proven inaccurate because they're still focused on their preconceived opinion. If it weren't for their previous opinion, then they would be more open to hearing both sides.

To conclude, confirmation bias is typically not true, but just a thought or opinion that has been misconstrued because of their bias and stereotype to the situation. These people usually will blow off or shrug off the things that don't back up their stereotype or opinion.

AntiWar Agenda

Antiwar Agenda

If you take a look at the websites ANTIWAR.COM and The American Conservativethey have an antiwar agenda, but if you looked at the mainstream news then it would be quite the opposite. I've seen articles before about people being against a war, but nothing close to how these websites portrayed it. It makes you speculate a little about why we aren't seeing this in the mainstream news, rather than being almost hidden from the world.

Some of the potential reasons as to why we have to seek out obscure websites to see these strong antiwar voices are because it doesn't fit the news that the media is trying to portray and it can be sheltered so people only see a certain side of things. Typically when you look at the internet nowadays there's numerous of websites that try to appeal to an audience and avoid speaking about certain things.

The websites were more opinionated and more direct than the ones you would typically see in the mainstream news. I feel like that's one of the biggest reasons as to why it gets hidden from the mainstream news because it has their own opinions and they're not afraid to hide or filter it. The mainstream news, for the most part says things that is widely known across all medias. While, on the other hand there seems to be a distinct difference between the two. These antiwar websites say things that aren't well-known across all media platforms, which makes them different. The media sometimes doesn't like different, which negatively impacts this websites' views. I've never once heard of either of these two websites and it's because they've been sheltered from me and everyone else due to those reasons.

EOTO Technology

Typewriter/EOTO Technology

I learned about a new technology from one of my classmates from our EOTO presentations. I learned about the typewriter and all the things it helped encourage or start. The first person to invent the typewriter was Francesco Rampazetto in 1575. The typewriter was important to getting news out, but it started to develop more in the mid-to-late 1800s. The first practical typewriter was invented by Christopher Lathan Sholes in 1867. I also learned about the Remington's in the 1870s and how it put writing machines on the market. In 1874 the first Remington was developed and in 1878 the Remington 2 was put out for the public. An important key came with the Remington 2. The shift key emerged in 1878, which appeared on the left side of the keyboard.

An interesting fact I learned from the presentation was that 64% of typists were women by 1890. It was a job opportunity for a lot of women post Civil War. The typewriter was used for letter and novels and Mark Twain is an example to that. The typewriter also affected the business and office world drastically as it created ways to get information out to the public.

The QWERTY keyboard were the first keys of the typewriter. Even today, people still use their computer and phones with the QWERTY keyboard. Word processor eventually entered the market in the 1980s. If it wasn't for the typewriter, then a lot of things would be different. Who knows where the world and technology would be if it wasn't for the typewriter being created in 1575.

Eight Values of Free Expression

Eight Values of Free Expression

The Eight Values of Free Expression are important to having the freedom to express your opinion. One of the eight free expressions that resonated with me the most was promote tolerance. Promote tolerance resonates with me the most because we see it a lot nowadays on the internet and social media where people get into trouble for hate speech. For example, in the NBA this season, Kyrie Irving got in a heap of trouble for sharing anti-semitic material on Twitter. Irving then was suspended by the NBA and the Brooklyn Nets for five games and he couldn't return unless he met six conditions. The conditions included, apologizing and condemning the film he promoted, make a 500,000 donation anti-hate causes, complete sensitivity training, meet with Jewish leaders, and meeting with the owner of the team to get a better understanding of everything. Irving not only was not allowed to play NBA games unless the conditions were met, but he he also lost his endorsement deal with Nike from the event.

Although I believe that promoting tolerance is an important value of expression, I also believe that the individual self fulfillment is just as important. Individual self fulfillment is important because it helps people to create their own identity and just be themselves instead of conforming to other beliefs and opinions. I believe in people having their own views and opinions and not being condemned for having those certain views or beliefs. Anymore there is way too much hate over people with different beliefs and too many people trying to make others conform their views to their own viewpoint. Individual self-fulfillment is a crucial thing that I feel like has almost went away from this generation. It seems like people can be afraid to believe in what they actually believe because they don't want to be different or of opposing opinion.

Promote tolerance is one of the values I see commonly in everyday life. In this generation, social media is a platform used by a lot of people, but there can be forms of punishment, if you say something harmful or use hate speech towards someone. Over social media it becomes evident that people say anything because they're behind a screen and feel like they won't get punished, but they're wrong. Typically, now people can face  punishments for words said online, which will hopefully lead to them not using hate speech again. Promoting tolerance can also be used in other ways as well. For instance, you can see people on TV shows get "cancelled" for comments or get talked about in a negative way on social media. Promoting tolerance is important for people to learn what's right and what's wrong. Even though we have the right to freedom of speech, there's just certain things that you should avoid saying or there will be a form of punishment. These punishments are enforced to show people what is acceptable behavior and what isn't. If the behavior is unacceptable, then there will be some sort of penalty or punishment.

EOTO Project: Drones

     EOTO PROJECT: Drones

Drones are machines that fly around that typically can be used for many different ways and purposes. Drones have been used in wars for different reasons. Some of these include capturing photos, scouting strategies, and to protect bases. A drone can be another set of eyes, which can help protect a base or it can scout the opposing strategies of the other countries. It can also be used in other ways outside of the war. For example, it can be used in many situations that help benefit businesses and organizations. It can get them the shots they need for certain things or the drones can help deliver packages quicker and more efficiently than a normal delivery system could.

Abraham Karem was the man who invented the first drone called "The Predator." The Predator was the invention that sparked the creation of more drones. Karem was a natural enthusiast and started building models of aircraft at the age of 14 years old.  The drone was created in Karem's garage in Los Angeles. The "Predator" was started by a drone technology demonstrator called the "Albatross." The success of the predator changed "military aviation" today. The Predator fired its first missile on October 7th in 2001 over Afghanistan. At that time, the U.S. only had a "handful of UAVS", but now the armed services have nearly 8,000.

Drones have had a major impact on the world and technology today. One of the biggest impacts the drones have had is making the world a more safer place because of the added surveillance and security. Drones can be a safe way to follow criminals or track the perimeter of buildings to make sure that everything is safe and secure. The police also use drones in "car chases" because it reduces the chances of a potential accident. Another positive impact that drones have on the world is that they can save lives.  An example of that is in Minnesota a police drone pilot used a thermal camera to find an 84-year-old man, who had disappeared into a swampy area. If it wasn't for the drone then the man would've been found too late because the weather was too bad to fly an airplane and look for the man.  If you want faster delivery, then drones can also positively impact that and get it to you faster than you would've without drones. Fastery delivery of items and packages is very crucial to the success of many businesses and organizations.

Drones have also had a couple of negative effects to it, but so does a lot of inventions. Some of the negative effects of dronces include, they can be hacked, can be used for the wrong purposes, potentially hurt or harm people, and create lack of privacy. In the wrong hands, drones can be very dangerous and potentially very harmful to people. It's a scary thought to think about if a drone got hacked and how much it could be capable of and how much damage it could create. The question is, does the danger of these drones outweigh the positive impact that they bring to the world?
