EOTO Technology

Typewriter/EOTO Technology

I learned about a new technology from one of my classmates from our EOTO presentations. I learned about the typewriter and all the things it helped encourage or start. The first person to invent the typewriter was Francesco Rampazetto in 1575. The typewriter was important to getting news out, but it started to develop more in the mid-to-late 1800s. The first practical typewriter was invented by Christopher Lathan Sholes in 1867. I also learned about the Remington's in the 1870s and how it put writing machines on the market. In 1874 the first Remington was developed and in 1878 the Remington 2 was put out for the public. An important key came with the Remington 2. The shift key emerged in 1878, which appeared on the left side of the keyboard.

An interesting fact I learned from the presentation was that 64% of typists were women by 1890. It was a job opportunity for a lot of women post Civil War. The typewriter was used for letter and novels and Mark Twain is an example to that. The typewriter also affected the business and office world drastically as it created ways to get information out to the public.

The QWERTY keyboard were the first keys of the typewriter. Even today, people still use their computer and phones with the QWERTY keyboard. Word processor eventually entered the market in the 1980s. If it wasn't for the typewriter, then a lot of things would be different. Who knows where the world and technology would be if it wasn't for the typewriter being created in 1575.
