U.S Supreme Court

U.S. Supreme Court

I learned that the Supreme Court remains the most powerful judicial body in the U.S. The Supreme Court also are "deliberate" and reach their decisions in public. A couple of other things I learned from the video was that the court's opinion is typically finished in about four weeks and that the "justice may re-draft a dozen or more times in effort to persuade the others to join the opinion." I also was unaware that the court has a tradition to announce their decisions and opinions for all of the current cases before the end of the term, which occurs in late June.

One of the most important takeaways is that you have to give it around three-to-five years to really feel "less strange" about being in the Supreme Court. For many it sounds like it takes a good amount of time before you can settle in and feel more comfortable. One Supreme Court member mentioned that being appointed to the Supreme Court was the equivalent of "being struck by lightning." Also, another important takeaway is that the court must always defend the constitution or the U.S. would no longer be the freest nation in the world to exist.

The most surprising thing I learned from the video is that the people had a lot of trust in the Supreme Court. For example, the video said whenever the Supreme Court speaks the people obeyed. To have the people behind your decisions as a court is a huge thing. I was honestly surprised to hear that the people trusted the court and were for the most part behind their decisions.

The video certainly changed the way I thought of the Supreme Court because before I watched the video, I wasn't aware how supportive the people were of the court. As the video said "most people accepted the fact that the court tries to make it straight." The video also mentioned how the power of the court is the power of trust earned, which is the trust of the American people.

Privacy, Online & Off

 Privacy, Online & Off

In the world we live in now there really is no such thing as privacy. With the internet today and the new technology it has made it a lot easier for people to interfere with your privacy. Feeling like you have no privacy to do things can make you paranoid and make you feel not safe. It's definitely a problem in the world we're living in. It's shocking to think that the daily messages people send to their family members or friends can be seen by the government.

These issues affect me and my friends/family because the government knows way too much about us. It paints an image to the local police officers on who they think you are based on the whereabouts of where you go. It can paint a false image of who you truly are, which is truly a scary thought to think about. It's frightening to think that the government knows where we're at most of the time and how long we were there.

The government should realize that we should all have our own privacy and that them listening to our phone calls or looking at our messages is unfair. As people we deserve to have our own privacy and not have to worry about someone watching and tracking us all the time. As well, I believe that the government should do a better job of safe-keeping people's information to themselves, if they are going to track our everyday moves. For example, when you search up a family member's name or anyone's name it can tell their whole life story, including their addresses, phone numbers, and names of their family.

There's not much we can do to protect ourselves from invasions of our privacy, but there's some things we can prevent. Some things include not posting a lot of your public information online and also making sure who you're sending something to is worth your trust. It's a tough world that we live in currently, but if you avoid putting everything online, then it becomes harder to track what's going on in your life. Sometimes our privacy can be out of our control, but all most people can really do is control what they can control by just not putting out private information for everyone to see.

Five Top Sources of News and Information

Five Top Sources of News and Information

ESPN: ESPN is among one of my many sources I look at for news. I'm a big sports fan and ESPN is an important source to stay up to date with the sports world. Whether it's news or updates or checking to see the scores of games across the different sports, it has you covered. Typically when you search ESPN it includes a variety of news stories that surround the different athletics, whether it's injury updates or power rankings of teams for a sport or just a news story.

Fox News:  Although, I don't typically look at news outside of sports, Fox News is a really informative website that can get updates around the world of news out. Similarly to many sports websites, it includes a list of stories from the world to keep people involved in what's going on across the states and countries. However, instead of sports news it involves politics and events that are going on. Fox News will sometimes post some sports news, but the majority of the articles consist of news outside of sports around the world.

CBS Sports: CBS Sports, which is very similar to ESPN and other sports update websites is another one of my go-to's. CBS Sports typically covers all the sports across the board and provides other types of media with videos. It's a good source because it gives you a lot of information and updates such as, scores, injury updates, and any rumors or trades happening in sports. It's also very well organized, which makes it easier for the audience to read.

Social media: Even though it may not be the most factual thing to use, I do use social media platforms to get my news. Sometimes social media can be the fastest and most simplest way to get news. It could be a page that you follow through Twitter, Instagram, or another social media site. These pages can be the fastest way to receive news as it seems to be the new way of receiving news among this new generation.

Bleacher Report: Bleacher Report, which began in 2005 has grown a lot over the past decade. Bleacher Report really started to trend upwards over the last five or so years as they became a lot more popular. It's become one of if not the most popular sports news site. It consists of a lot of news stories across the different sports. It's really efficient in posting highlights of games or posting articles in a blog form.
